Why do men cheat?: Teaser fragment from A Taste of Loving Discipline.

Why do men cheat on their wives/girlfriends?

One could also pose the question 'Why do women cheat on their husbands/boy friends?' ... but that's a question for another day!

So, back to the cheating men. According to David Buss, professor of psychology at the University of Texas and author of The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating, the No.1 reason is men crave sexual variety. Buss argues that men have evolved the desire to be with different women, because it’s very simple for men to reproduce (one act of sex versus nine months of pregnancy for women), so to create as many offspring as possible they’re biologically programmed to mate with many women.

It would appear that most unfaithful men aren’t seeking out an additional relationship. In fact, most men aren’t even looking to replace or give up the relationship they already have. Unfaithful men are generally only seeking to satisfy physical needs - pretty much like Geoffrey, a character in A Taste of Loving Discipline. He's in an intermittent relationship with June, yet simultaneously working his way through all the life models in the School of Art. Geoffrey is one of those men who can't be faithful even if they try to be.

Here's an extract from A Taste of Loving Discipline:

This stretch of the coastline was wild and wonderful, and part of it's charm was that one could walk for miles yet hardly see anyone else. June stared out to sea. The sun had peeked out from behind a cloud to dazzle the surface of the waves that shimmered and melded with the distant horizon. Overhead the gulls swooped and called to one another, and the salt tang of the sea air was everywhere. June savoured the moment. Her cell phone in her pocket distracted her by it's intrusive ringing. She fished it out to discover the caller's name – it was Geoffrey.

“Geoffrey. Hi.”

“Hi yourself. I rang the landline at the house and your dad told me you've moved out! Is that right?”

“It sure is.”

“Bit sudden, isn't it?”

“Yep. But you know me. I'm a creature of impulse at times.”

Geoffrey laughed. “Don't I know it. So - you're up at the cottage? All settled in?”

“Yes, more or less. You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff I've brought with me. I've turned the front bedroom into a studio – fantastic views – very inspirational.”

“Yeah, I remember. I'd better come up there sometime soon? How about it?”

“Cool.” She nodded. A muffled laugh sounded, accompanied by a whisper. “What was that?”

There was a slight pause before Geoffrey replied. “Nothing. It was nothing.”

“Yes it was. Someone laughed. Who is with you?”

“No one, I'm alone.”

“No you're not. Don't lie to me Geoffrey.”

“I'm not,” he declared in an affronted tone.

“Bullshit. You're with someone – a woman. I distinctly heard a female voice. To call me when you're obviously in bed with someone else is pushing it don't you think? Anyway, I've had enough of our intermittent liaison. It was fun while it lasted, but it's over, as of now. Goodbye, Geoffrey.” She hung up, fuming. Enough is enough.

“But … June. June? Damn it!” Geoffrey stared at his phone in amazement. She'd never hung up on him before.

“Come back to bed darling,” purred Melanie. Or was it Miranda?

“No. Get dressed. I have to go out.”

“Oh? Where are we going?”

“I said I not we.” Geoffrey frowned. “I'm going to take a shower. You can see yourself out,” he said dismissively. He strode naked into the bathroom. As far as women were concerned, they were ten a penny, but June was different from the regular bimbos. They had a great deal in common - she was clever and funny and a talented artist. He was attracted to June Jackson and he wasn't used to being dumped. It was an alien feeling and he didn't like it. As the hot water jetted over his skin he resolved to drive up to the cottage and win her back. Women were temperamental creatures. She'd soon be amenable to resurrecting their relationship.
